South Africa
The FIFA Presidential aspirant, Tokyo Sexwale has been called to appear before the South Africa Football Association to explain himself over a ‘low-profile’ presidential campaign to replace Sepp Blatter.
Sexwale, a former Robben Island prisoner with Mandela has made little impact in the campaign which has triggered the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) to call for his explanation.
Plans for him to meet the association’s leadership on Monday were cancelled because Sexwale is overseas, SAFA spokesman Dominic Chimhavi told Reuters.
The billionnaire businessman has failed to be endorsed by the Confederation of African Football despite being the only African in the five-man race.
This contrasts with Asian support for their president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain and UEFA’s backing of the Swiss Gianni Infantino.
Sexwale’s manifesto offers few ideas on how to change the corruption-haunted FIFA and also calls for lifting of a ban on sponsorship appearing on national team shirts to allow associations to increase revenue.
